Ammunition found at Alice Springs airport (AAP)

Three flights have been delayed as passengers were re-screened by security after the discovery of ammunition on the tarmac at Alice Springs airport.

The ammunition was spotted just before midday on Thursday, and airport manager Dave Batic said it was not yet known how it got there.

"It was air-side; we don't know if it was a departing or arriving passenger that might have dropped it," he told AAP.

He could not confirm whether the ammunition was live or a spent cartridge.

There were delays of about an hour for Tiger Air passengers flying to Melbourne, and for Qantas passengers booked on flights to Melbourne and Darwin, as security staff had them disembark from their planes and re-screened.

"As a precaution we will re-screen all the passengers prior to any departure so we know those aircraft arriving at capital cities will be fine," Mr Batic said.

He said such incidents were quite routine.

"We cleared the sterile area twice already this week for a variety of breaches; we're obliged to follow the standards and regulations for security so we're quite happy to maintain that standard for our passengers," he said.

One breach involved visiting foreign military personnel who entered an area they weren't supposed to because they were not aware of Australian aviation safety requirements, Mr Batic said.

"We have other problems, with backpackers that carry gas cylinders and things like that," he said.

"They're all serious issues, but they're all managed the same way."

Passengers were reboarding their delayed flights at about 1pm.
