A man who bludgeoned a 10-month-old boy to death during a Victorian home burglary will be sentenced on Friday.
Harley Hicks, 21, beat little Zayden Veal-Whitting more than 30 times about the face and head with a homemade baton of copper wire wrapped in tape.
A Victorian Supreme Court jury found Hicks guilty of the murder, committed in the Bendigo suburb of Long Gully early on June 15, 2012.
Prosecutor Michelle Williams SC described the murder in a pre-sentence hearing as "an evil killing without any rational explanation".
She asked Justice Stephen Kaye to jail Hicks for life with a non-parole period.
But defence barrister David Gallowes urged the judge to consider other sentencing options, citing Hicks' troubled childhood, drug and alcohol use, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anti-social personality disorder and youth.
Zayden's mother, 24-year-old Casey Veal, said finding her son covered in blood in his cot would haunt her forever.
"Some days I am scared to close my eyes to relive that experience again," she told the court in May.
Justice Kaye said the crime fell into the most serious cases of murder.
