Essendon players will remain anonymous during next month's Federal Court action against ASADA by the club and suspended coach James Hird.

At a directions hearing today lawyers representing the 34 current and former Essendon players issued with show cause notices were successful in gaining an undertaking that they will not be identified.

Justice John Middleton has asked lawyers to file a confidential list of the players' names to the court but the players will not be required to join the proceedings.

A Federal Court trial beginning on August 11 will hear claims from Essendon and Hird that the anti-doping authority has acted beyond its powers during its investigation with the AFL into Essendon's 2012 supplements program.

ASADA had sought a court direction on whether the players needed to join the proceedings but its legal team accepted the undertaking of the provision of the confidential list to the court.

More to follow.
