Labor won*t stop MPs* pay freeze: Bowen (AAP)

Labor won't oppose a pay freeze for federal MPs, but shadow treasurer Chris Bowen says it won't make voters feel better about the government's upcoming budget.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott, with the backing of the independent Remuneration Tribunal, will freeze the salaries of federal politicians and senior public servants, News Corp Australia reports.

Mr Bowen says Labor won't "stand in the way of that", even though he think it's a stunt.

"But it's hardly the main game, and Australians are going to have a lot more to be angry about," he told ABC TV on Sunday.

"If he thinks that freezing his salary is going to make Australians feel better about pension cuts, tax rises and other changes, I think he's kidding himself."

The pay freeze could cost Mr Abbott, who earns an annual salary of $500,000, an estimated $10,000 a year and up to $16,000 a year with the impact of his proposed deficit tax factored in.

The average backbencher would miss out on an estimated $3900, based on having to forego a 2.4 per cent pay increase.
