Mount Lyell mine owners to reveal future after workplace deaths (ABC)

A decision on whether to reopen the Mount Lyell copper mine in Tasmania's west could be announced today.

There has been no production at Queenstown's mine since January when a contractor was killed underground.

It was the third death at the mine in six weeks.

About 200 workers have been stood down on half pay while they wait for a decision on the mine's future.

Management is meeting workers today and is expected to make an announcement this afternoon.

Last month, CMT flagged a safer, automated mining method which may allow it to restart production next month.

Union official John Short says the community needs the mine to reopen.

"At the last meeting the company was looking at new methods of mining that would be hopefully a lot safer than what they've done in the past and that these new methods would allow the company to restart production, he said.

Worksafe Tasmania has been investigating the deaths.

He says locals also want to hear the outcome of the investigation.

"I would hope that they're coming to the end of their investigation and should be able to provide a report."
