A rarely-seen treasure of Australian military history has arrived in Melbourne.
A landing boat, used by the Anzacs in Gallipoli, will go on display for the first time in decades.
After 25 years in storage, it has made the painstaking move from a warehouse at Canberra's War Memorial, to Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance.
The wooden boat, which transported soldiers under fire onto the beaches of Gallipoli, will be the star attraction of the Shrine's redevelopment.
War Memorial historian Ashley Ekins says the boat is one of the iconic objects from the Gallipoli Campaign.
"I think this will evoke to people just how perilous this landing was. Thirty men packed in a boat, rowing for their lives under fire".
It was 99 years ago that the Anzacs rowed into history in this flimsy lifeboat, transporting mainly stretcher bearers to shore.
After its long drive from Canberra, the boat will be delicately manoeuvred into a new undercroft at the Shrine.
"It will convey in a way that no film, no records, diaries or memoir ever could. I mean here is one of the objects that was actually there on the day."
