Victorian Government to expand program to curb domestic violence attacks (ABC)

A pilot program in Victoria aimed at protecting women and children from domestic violence will get a $4.5 million boost in the year's state budget.

The Strengthening Risk Management Demonstration Projects, trialled in Geelong and Hume, brings together family violence, human services, police, corrections and the courts to identify high risk offenders and offer support to victims.

The Victorian Government will now expand the program to eight other areas across the state.

Recent police figures show that in the past financial year, more than 820 offenders breached intervention orders at least three times, and 200 of those violated orders more than five times.

Last month, 33-year-old Fiona Warzywoda of Melton West was allegedly stabbed to death by her de-facto husband in the middle of a busy Sunshine shopping strip.

She had just left the Sunshine Magistrates Court where she had taken out a family violence order.

In February, 11-year-old Luke Batty was stabbed to death by his father, Greg Anderson, in front of horrified onlookers after a cricket training session at the oval in the small town of Tyabb, south-east of Melbourne.

Anderson had numerous intervention orders taken out against him.

Police failed to execute an outstanding arrest warrant when they were in contact with him in the days leading up to the murder.

"The clear message is that violence against women and children is unacceptable in any form, in any circumstance, in any community," Community Services Minister Mary Wooldridge said.

Ms Wooldridge says the key strength of the pilot program is the Risk Assessment and Management Panels that work to identify high risk situations, and co-ordinate the sharing of information between the services.

Domestic Violence Victoria says there were 29 family violence related deaths in Victoria last year, and police responded to over 60,000 family violence incidents.
