Northern Territory Police say a man's family may have witnessed him being attacked by a crocodile in Kakadu National Park, south-west of Darwin.
Authorities are searching for the 62-year-old man, who was on a boat when he was attacked in a billabong at Cooinda late on Saturday afternoon.
It is understood the man's wife, son and daughter-in-law were with him at the time.
"I believe the son was involved in the initial search for his father, which is obviously traumatising and anyone's heart would go out to the family in that sort of incident," Superintendent Bob Harrison said.
"We received a call from the manager of the Gagudju lodge there that some people had walked in and told them [the man] had been taken by a crocodile."
Police and park rangers have spent the night searching nearby waterways for the man and crocodile.
More police and rangers will join the search this morning.
"At this time we have eight people down there and we'll be ramping that up if we don't locate the gentleman during the night," Superintendent Harrison said.
"We always hold out hope but obviously a crocodile attack is very serious and there are grave concerns."
It is believed the man's son and daughter in law are locals.
A 12-year-old boy died in January after being attacked by a crocodile in Kakadu National Park.
Human remains were found near where the boy had been swimming with friends in a billabong west of Jabiru.
Another 12-year-old was bitten on the arm in the attack. He fought the animal off and survived, and was treated for cuts to his arms.
