High Court to give verdict on Manus Island (AAP)

View Comments

The High Court is set to hand down its ruling on a legal challenge to the Australian-run immigration detention centre in Papua New Guinea.

Last month, lawyers for an Iranian asylum seeker, known as S156, argued before the court that his detention was not valid under the constitution.

They accused former immigration minister Chris Bowen of failing to legally designate Manus Island as an asylum seeker processing centre.

The High Court will release its ruling at 10.15 am (AEST) on Wednesday.

If the case is successful it will force the detention centre's closure and throw the federal government's policies of offshore processing and refugee resettlement in PNG into disarray.

There were violent scenes at the centre in February with one asylum seeker killed during clashes between detainees and PNG nationals.
