Police have arrested five men and seized more than 20 vehicles in raids part of an investigation into the winding back of odometers on second-hand vehicles in Adelaide.
Among the 23 cars seized were BMWs, Mercedes, Holdens, Toyotas, Range Rovers and a Volvo, but the number of cars affected is tipped to reach 70.
It is alleged the odometers were wound back by an average of 100,000 kilometres.
Police have been on the case for six weeks after a tip-off sparked 'Operation Shark'.
"Even if you know what you're looking for it is still very difficult to determine, so they're actually specialised at doing this, so it's quite sophisticated what they've done," Detective chief inspector John Gerlach said.
No dealerships are implicated, but one of the five men arrested was a car dealer.
Investigators allege it was his licence used to move the mostly high-end vehicles, which were sold online, in papers and through auction houses.
Police said innocent dealers and auctioneers also became victims
The five suspects, aged between 22 and 66, face a maximum 15 years jail for each charge if convicted.
