Heavy outback rain has caused flash flooding at Coober Pedy in South Australia and left some of the residents 'hopping mad'.

Some of the town's numerous dug-outs have been flooded, as have above-ground homes and businesses.

About 115 millimetres of rain has fallen on the often-parched area in the past day.

Local gallery owner Terry Brennan-Kuss has been surprised by the deluge.

"We are not used to getting so much water in one hit in Coober Pedy I can tell you, it was pretty incredible," he said.

"We had to shovel dirt up against the laundry door to stop it from coming in the laundry, but if the water hadn't gone into the underground [area] then the house and gallery would have gone under, so that sort of saved us.

"The only problem is now we've got goodness knows how many thousands of litres sitting underneath us."

The torrential rain flooded a kangaroo orphanage Mr Brennan-Kuss runs, leaving the furry marsupials with only one place to go.

"We had these huge, big, wet drippy kangaroos bouncing around inside the house which was a bit of fun," he said.

The rain is expected to pass and the weather improve in the day ahead, but the State Emergency Service will be kept busy pumping water from houses and business premises both above and below ground in the opal-mining town.
