A young comedian from India has described being thrust into the spotlight before 2,000 people at the Melbourne Comedy Festival as the best night of his life.

Rohan Desai stamped his name on the stand-up scene when he recently won a RAW comedy competition in New Delhi, supported by the Australian Government and the Australia-India Council.

The 25 year-old's prize was the trip to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Rohan's performance at the Melbourne Town Hall on Sunday was a big hit - and an experience worth coming all the way from India for.

"It was amazing. I think it was the best night of my life," he said.

"I can't imagine something going better than this. I was shocked actually."

Rohan openly admits to getting anxious on stage, so he's tailored his act to suit his personality.

The audience immediately warmed to his tips for nervous performers.

"Speak clearly into the microphone and maintain eye contact," he said, reading aloud his lines from a script.

"Start off with some crowd interaction... Hi crowd."

Before his big night, Rohan was reunited with two Australian comics who went to India in February in search of the country's best new comedian.

For Kate McLennan and Justin Hamilton, Rohan was a clear stand-out.

Like he wasn't the funniest person - but he just had the most money on the night... No," McLennan joked.

"He stood out as someone sort of completely different from a lot of the other contestants.

"He was just so unique and a little bit out of the box really."

Rohan grew up in Surat and moved to New Delhi a year ago.

He works as an animator and graphic designer, and is also a short-film maker in his spare time.

Until now, Rohan has kept his stand-up comedy somewhat of a secret.

"Most of my friends have not seen me perform luckily and my parents also because they live in a different town," he said.

"They have not seen me perform and I prefer it that way. It's hard to explain what I'm doing so I think it's better if they don't see it.

"I just don't think they'll get it - they'll be like 'what are you doing!'"

Passionate about story telling, Rohan never thought he was especially funny.

He entered the open mic competition on a whim, and to his surprise the audience laughed.

"I can't believe what is happening... I don't even know if I want to be a comedian but I'm just trying it out," Rohan said.

Australian comedian Justin Hamilton has encouraged Rohan to continue stand-up comedy.

"He is crazy if he doesn't want to continue because he's really funny," Hamilton said.

"I feel like he should definitely stick with it because this is just the tip of the iceberg with his talent and what he can do with."
