A rescue operation is underway at a Hunter Valley coal mine following reports two people had been injured after an underground wall collapse.
Police say the accident happened just after 9:00pm on Tuesday at the Austar coal mine at Paxton, 10 kilometres south of Cessnock.
Police say a wall has collapsed underground and two miners are unaccounted for.
Ambulance services have tweeted that paramedics are treating injured men at the site.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter is there, as well as specialist paramedics trained for underground rescues.
It is not known if the missing men are trapped, or how many men may have been injured.
Ambulance services say communication is difficult because the accident happened kilometres underground.
