ACT kangaroo cull remains on hold for the foreseeable future after tribunal hearing (ABC)

The ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal (ACAT) has extended a stay on the annual kangaroo cull in Canberra after a hearing.

The cull of more than 1,600 eastern grey kangaroos to reduce overgrazing in eight nature reserves was set to start last week and continue until August.

But Animal Liberation lodged a challenge in the ACAT arguing there is no scientific evidence to prove the shooting of kangaroos helps the environment.

Evidence was also presented about the negative impact of large numbers of kangaroos on sensitive grass and woodland areas.

This is the second year the animal welfare lobby group has pursued legal action to prevent the cull from going ahead.

Last year a similar challenge by Animal Liberation was largely rejected by ACAT, though the overall target number of animals to be killed was reduced.

During the latest hearing, ACAT president Bill Stefaniak was asked to disqualify himself because he may be seen as biased as a member of the Sporting Shooters Association.

He declined, saying he was only a member of the club so he could use its local shooting range.

The stay has been extended until the matter can be heard by the full bench.

The next hearing date is set down for May 30, 2014.
