Children injured in Gidgegannup bus crash (ABC)

View Comments

Two dozen people, most of them children, have been taken to hospital after their bus ran off a road in Gidgegannup, north-east of Perth.

The incident occurred on Toodyay Road, near the intersection of The Springs Road, close to the town's centre.

It was reported to police at 7:54pm.

The bus is thought to have left the road and rolled into a ditch.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services, who assisted at the scene, said the vehicle was a school bus.

There were three adults on board the bus, and the rest were children, according to police.

Police say none were critically injured, although there appeared to be broken bones and some suspected internal injuries in some cases.

Eight children have been taken to Princess Margaret Hospital, another five passengers to Royal Perth, and eight to Swan Districts for treatment.

A bus was sent to bring the remaining people back to Perth.

Police say they believe Malaysian nationals were on board.

The incident is just eight kilometres along the same road where Morangup mother Jess Seager and her sons Jayden, 6, and Cody, 3, were killed when their car collided with a truck in July last year.

Mass community meetings followed Ms Seager's death, with community members warning authorities about the dangers of that stretch of road.
