Chloe Valentine manslaughter: DPP to appeal against jail terms on mother and ex-partner (ABC)

The Director of Public Prosecutions in South Australia today will launch an appeal against jail sentences given to a couple found guilty of the manslaughter of four-year-old Adelaide girl Chloe Valentine.

They were convicted over her death for repeatedly making her ride a motorbike in a backyard and crash.

There also is to be parliamentary scrutiny of the government agency Families SA.

Family First won backing for an Upper House select committee to investigate.

Family First MLC Dennis Hood says the inquiry will look into issues including how Families SA recruits, manages and support foster carers.

He says there have been many complaints about the government agency.

"Sometimes things go wrong and that's when we have a government agency whose job it is to intervene swiftly and intervene appropriately and that's not happening often enough," he said.

"When it does sometimes they get it wrong so we need to set in place procedures that make it right every single time."
