Broome's iconic Cable Beach has been filled with the sound of pounding hooves for Australia's only beach polo event this weekend.

Highlights included a match between professionals from as far away as Colombia and local Aboriginal stockmen.

About 50 horses were transported thousands of kilometres from WA's south to the Kimberley town.

The event was first held in 2010 but has been marred by ongoing legal action.

It was cancelled due to a disagreement over who held the event rights in 2012.

Legal action pertaining to the ownership rights ended with an appeal being dismissed by the Supreme Court in WA last month.

In 2011, a man drove a car into a marquee hosting a function as part of the event but no-one was seriously injured.

But all of that was far from the minds of those attending this year's matches.

Organisers say about 3,000 people attended over the two days, including those who watched from the beach and others who bought tickets to marquees.
