Top Tasmanian health officials under fire (AAP)

Two of Tasmania's top health bureaucrats have been accused of improperly employing family members.

The chief executives of two Tasmanian Health Organisations (THOs) have been named in an Integrity Commission report tabled in parliament by new health minister Michael Ferguson.

Jane Holden, the acting CEO of THO-South, was suspended last week while Gavin Austin, CEO of THO-North-West, has been given until the end of Tuesday to explain why he shouldn't also be stood down.

The alleged misconduct dates back to 2009 when Ms Holden chaired the selection panel that employed Mr Austin despite her knowing the applicant, the minister said.

Among the other allegations are that Ms Holden's husband was paid nearly $198,000 over two years to perform building and maintenance work he was not accredited to do.

Mr Austin's wife and son were given jobs in his organisation outside proper processes, Mr Ferguson said.

Tens of thousands of dollars were paid to consultants who were friends or associates of Mr Austin, it is alleged.

The financial cost of the alleged non-compliance was more than $500,000, not including salaries paid to family members.

"Tasmanians will be appalled by the content of the Integrity Commission's report because once again we see wasteful practices in health and patient care taking a back seat to allegations of nepotism and special deals for special mates," Mr Ferguson said.

Ms Holden's role in the stalled $586 million Royal Hobart Hospital redevelopment had recently come under scrutiny with the government instigating a review.

Tasmania's three THOs replaced area health services in 2012.
