The Sydney Roosters took down a Canterbury Bulldogs outfit ravaged by State of Origin absences, running out 32-12 victors on Friday night.

The Bulldogs - missing Trent Hodkinson, Josh Reynolds, Josh Morris and Tony Williams - were outclassed in the final third of the game by a Roosters team still boasting most of its stars.

It was a fiery encounter with plenty of scuffles - with Bulldogs captain Michael Ennis even exchanging some words with some of the Roosters on the way to the dressing rooms - but the video referee attracted as much attention as anyone in the first 40 minutes.

Bulldogs youngster Moses Mbye, filling at half-back for Trent Hodkinson, was controversially denied a try in the 12th minute when the on-field decision was upheld despite no clear separation between his arm and the ball.

Five minutes later, Roosters winger Corey Thompson leapt high and came down claiming a try. It was clearly four points on replay but the red 'NO TRY' was flashed up on the Olympic stadium big screen.

There was bad news for the Bulldogs with lead referee Ashley Klein informing Ennis video referee Steve Chiddy accidentally hit the wrong button.

The reigning premiers only led 10-8 at half-time but scored four tries in the second half, including three between the 65th and 71st minutes, to put the result beyond doubt.

Young Bulldogs prop David Klemmer was involved in a number of confrontations throughout the night and could find himself in trouble after lifting his leg as ran into opposing props Sam Moa and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

More to follow.
