NSW braces for cold and damaging winds (AAP)

Seventeen degrees doesn't sound too bad for the middle of winter but icy gale force winds forecast for much of southern NSW will make it seem much colder than that.

Sydney and parts of southern NSW will wake on Tuesday to chilly conditions and damaging winds as a cold front moves through the state.

Winds up to 80km/h with gusts up to 110km/h are expected to extend to the coast and Central Ranges and ACT.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Sarah Chadwick said the gusty winds will make the day feel much colder than forecasted temperatures, including 17 degrees for Sydney.

"It will feel much colder than that with the winds," she said.

The cold front will bring blizzard conditions to the southern ranges, including snow fall of between 30mm-80mm over Monday and Tuesday.

Ms Chadwick said Sydney will experience the windiest conditions on Tuesday afternoon.

"The temperatures will begin to warm during the later part of the week but with the winds it will start to feel warmer from Wednesday," she said.

The windy conditions may still linger over the southern ranges on Wednesday.

The SES advises residents in these areas to move vehicles away from trees and secure loose outdoor items.
