A construction worker has been killed by a brick wall collapse at a work site in Melbourne's south-east.

Police said the man, aged in his early 30s, was standing next to a four-metre brick wall when it fell on him at the under-construction house on Elizabeth Street in Brighton East just before 9:30am (AEST).

The man died at the scene.

He was working alongside another man when the wall came down, but the other worker was not injured.

Detective Sergeant Gerry Richardson said the man's colleague tried to free him.

"Emergency services were called by the co-worker who was also on site," he said.

"When the emergency services got here they were able to free the man from underneath a brick wall and unfortunately he passed away a short time later."

The foreman of the site, Stan Bilic, said he was very close with the man's parents.

"I knew the day when he was born and I [saw] it when he died as well, which is very hard for me," he said.

ABC reporter Lisa Tucker visited the scene and said strong winds may have brought the wall down.

"It seems that there were two men working beside the wall when a middle section came down this morning," she said.

"Obviously his colleague is very distraught and has been speaking to police."

WorkSafe will investigate and police will prepare a report for the coroner.

James Taylor from the weather bureau said Melbourne recorded wind gusts of up 90 kilometres per hour this morning.

"There's a severe weather warning current for those northerly winds with local damage certainly possible," he said.
