Australian soldier who died on New Zealand*s Mount Cook named as 44-year-old commando Gary Francis (ABC)

The Australian soldier who died on New Zealand's Mount Cook yesterday has been named as Sergeant Gary Francis.

The 44-year-old was serving with the Sydney-based 2nd Commando Regiment.

He died during a mountain and cold weather training exercise.

Defence is not commenting on the circumstances behind his death.

It is understood he fell 40 metres into a crevasse when the snow bridge he was crossing collapsed.
