Community leaders, consular officials and the public will gather in Melbourne on Thursday to remember the many Victorian victims of downed flight MH17.

Premier Denis Napthine and other members of the Victorian parliament will attend the multi-faith service at St Paul's Cathedral, in Melbourne, from 10am.

Consular officials and representatives of the Dutch, Malaysian, Indonesian, Belgian, German, American and Canadian communities will also play a role in the service.

Dean of Melbourne Dr Andreas Loewe said it was an opportunity to commemorate "those who perished as a result of terrorist action, and to pray for their families and friends".

"As people from many backgrounds, we will join in prayer for our world, for freedom, justice and the rule of law," Dr Loewe also said in a statement.

"As Victorians of many faiths and from many nations, we will commit ourselves to work for a common vision of peace."

Among the 298 people on board the Malaysia Airways flight shot down over eastern Ukraine, 17 were from Victoria.

A further six victims were leading researchers, scientists and public health figures en route to an international AIDS conference in Melbourne.

The Melbourne event follows a service held at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney on Sunday, and other similar public events held around the country this week.
