Darwin's largest church St Mary's Star of the Sea Cathedral was filled to capacity for a commemorative service for the victims of the Malaysia Airlines disaster.

Prayers were dedicated to the communities of Maningrida and Palmerston, which are grieving for three Territory residents who died in the MH17 crash.

The service ended with people signing condolence books for the families of remote school teacher Emma Bell and long-term Territory public servants Theresa and Wayne Baker.

Travellers from the Netherlands also joined the service held for people of all faiths.

Darwin's Catholic Bishop Eugene Hurley urged those reflecting on the tragedy to commit to building peace.

"When we're confronted with this wicked act of destroying 298 innocent lives, so many of them little children in the MH17 tragedy, it confronts us not only with such an evil act, but also the limitations of our own lives," he said.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles told the gathering many tears had been shed for the Territory victims.

"Theresa was enjoying being on long-service leave and was counting down the days to her retirement early next year," he said.

"The couple had planned a new life travelling the world. Friends described Wayne as a fun-loving person who loved the outdoors, and Theresa as funny, witty and generous with all of her time."
