Police followed a trail of blood from a Melbourne hospital to a unit complex where two men had been stabbed.

The injured pair, a 21-year-old Yarraville man and an Altona North man, 25, were at a Williamstown apartment, in Melbourne's southwest, when they were stabbed early on Saturday, Senior Constable Olivia Dennison of Altona North police said.

The men walked to Williamstown Hospital for treatment but were transferred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries.

One of the men was stabbed in the legs, the other in the abdomen.

"Police were alerted that two men were the victims of a stabbing, and they located a blood trail and followed that blood trail and located the area where the incident occurred," Snr Const Dennison said.

The trail led to the foyer of an apartment complex nearby, she said.

"Inquiries are still ongoing and it is still early at this stage but it's believed an altercation involving a number of people occurred at that address, which resulted in the two victims being stabbed," Const Dennison said.

The injured men are assisting police, who have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
