A council on Sydney's wealthy north shore has hit back at backlash aimed at a proposal to give local rangers extra policing powers for driving offences.
Mosman mayor Peter Abelson says the plan has been grossly misrepresented, and the proposals would target minor traffic issues that police can't prioritise, such as disobeying stop signs and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.
"We have trained rangers who could easily photograph these things," he told AAP on Tuesday.
"It's entirely about working with police, not working against them.
"They would not carry guns, they would not chase vehicles. This whole thing has been a total beat up; it's been blown way out of proportion."
NSW Police Minister Stuart Ayres slammed the proposal and said local council officers should not have powers to book motorists for offences such as speeding and running red lights.
"I think the last thing people of NSW need is rangers with firearms, flashing sirens and undertaking police pursuits," he said on Tuesday.
"We've got a force of 16,500 police officers in NSW who are highly trained experts on what they do and we should just let them get on with their job."
Local Government Minister Paul Toole said local councils should stick to fixing potholes and collecting rubbish.
