More than 30 artists who did not make this year's Archibald Prize final list are getting a second chance to have their work seen.
The Salon Des Refuses, otherwise known as the Exhibition of Rejects, will open this weekend at the National Trust SH Ervin Gallery in Sydney.
The exhibition was initiated by the gallery in 1992 in response to the large number of works entered into the Archibald Prize not selected for hanging in the official exhibition.
The gallery's director, Jane Watters, said the selection panel was looking for work that showed innovation and experimentation.
"It's the best of the rest, we call it, and sometimes some people will say it may be better than the real thing - so we let people make up their own mind about that," she said.
Nick Stathopoulos is a four times Archibald finalist.
His photo-realist-style portrait of writer Robert Hoge is one of 830 rejected entries.
"If it was painted in a looser, more abstract style you'd be painting over all the hardships and the reconstructive surgery and the pain and suffering that he's gone through, so I think that needed to be upfront on this particular painting," he said.
The Real Thing singer Russell Morris is one of the famous faces on canvas at this exhibition.
There is also a portrait of singer-songwriter Gotye, as well as broadcasters Phillip Adams and Andrew Denton.
