Strong winds causing damage across Hobart (ABC)

The State Emergency Service (SES) is responding to urgent calls for assistance after high winds in Tasmania's south.

Roofs and sheds have been lifted from their foundations and trees have been uprooted.

Winds were expected to reach up to 110 kilometres an hour.

Police said trees had been brought down in Sandy Bay, Blackmans Bay, Cygnet and Richmond.

There were also reports of damage to several roofs in northern suburbs including Dynnyrne, Lutana, New Town and Glenorcy, while power lines are down in Lenah Valley.

Mark Dance of the SES has advised people to stay indoors.

More to come.
