Australia has made a second airdrop of weapons to Kurdish fighters taking on Islamic State extremists in northern Iraq.

Defence on Friday said the Royal Australian Air Force aircraft conducted its mission without incident delivering military stores to the Kurdish town of Erbil.

The C-17A Globemaster flew from Albania via Baghdad where Iraqi officials inspected and cleared the cargo.

The same aircraft conducted the first drop of ammunition to fighters last weekend.

Chief of Joint Operations Vice Admiral David Johnston said Australian aircraft were on stand-by to assist with more tasks.

"These supply runs are vital and most appreciated by those at the forefront of the campaign against Islamic extremists," he said in a statement on Friday.
