Search continues for man missing in ultralight plane crash off Barlings Beach on NSW coast (ABC)

Police divers will join this morning's search for a man missing after a plane crash on the New South Wales south coast.

The ultralight plane crashed into the ocean about 1 kilometre off Barlings Beach after leaving Moruya airport around midday yesterday.

One middle-aged man was pulled from the water but was unable to be revived.

A large-scale search failed to find the second man believed to be on board.

Police have been unable to identify who the missing man is.

Inspector Angela Burnell said darkness was significantly hampering the search last night.

"We have found a number of items of debris consistent with the reports we're investigating," she said.

"Further search needs to be conducted and the main body of the wreckage is believed to be underwater.

"We will be deploying divers ... to continue search for the wreckage."

Inspector Burnell said it was a tragic accident.

"It's going to touch our community. It's a small community down here and these kinds of events have a big impact on the community," she said.

The search will resume at first light today.
