Fake gun sparks two-hour police standoff (AAP)

A man brandishing a fake gun has sparked a two-hour standoff with police in southern NSW.

Police say they came across the man when investigating reports of an illegal camper about 20km north of Wollongong on Saturday afternoon - and found him holding what appeared to be a firearm.

As the man allegedly became increasingly aggressive and made numerous threats, the officers retreated.

After the two-hour siege, the man surrendered and the gun was found to be fake.

He was refused bail after being charged with assaulting police and entering enclosed lands, and will appear at Port Kembla Local Court on Sunday.
