Police have declared an emergency situation as they try to negotiate with a man who is inside a house at Caboolture, north of Brisbane.

Inspector Lee Jeffries says the 32-year-old man became angry at police and took his partner and two children hostage in a house on Torrens Road.

Inspector Jeffries says the family members were released unharmed early this morning, but police remain at the house talking to the man, who is alone and unarmed.

The man has plastered notes on the windows.

Inspector Jeffries says police are concerned the presence of authorities around the house is further agitating the man.

"So at this stage we're just going to continue trying to negotiate with him to reach a peaceful resolution to the circumstances, which we've already outlined to him," he said.

The public has been advised to avoid the area around Torrens Road, although there have been no evacuations.

Nearby residents have ben urged to stay indoors.

Police say officers were called about 12:15am (AEST) after a neighbour reported a disturbance.
