Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has cast doubt over claims that his department had tried to cover-up the extent of mental health problems suffered by children in detention.
Psychiatrist Peter Young, a former director of mental health services on Christmas Island, last week told a Human Rights Commission inquiry that the immigration department had attempted to withdraw damning statistics from official reports.
But Mr Morrison on Sunday said he had spoken to the secretary for the department, who disputed the allegations.
"I mean, in these meetings there is always two sets of versions of what has occurred," he told ABC Television.
"What they're working through is a process to get the best possible reporting of mental health in these facilities."
He warned against making "a whole bunch of conclusions" until the department had the opportunity to respond to the evidence.
"I've spoken to the secretary about that and he's written back to the commissioner and outlined what is actually occurring," he said.
