UN vote on Aust MH17 resolution (AAP)

View Comments

The UN Security Council is expected to vote on an Australian resolution demanding full and unrestricted access to the MH17 crash site.

A vote on the proposal is expected in New York about 5am Tuesday (AEST).

It will seek to have military activities in the area surrounding the site, in rebel-held east Ukraine, halted to allow for an international probe.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has criticised the situation there as "shambolic" and called for the bodies of dozens of Australian victims to be quickly returned home.

However, Russia, which has taken umbrage with the term "shooting down" of the aircraft in the draft proposal, may exercise veto powers to scrap the resolution.

But Mr Abbott is confident the resolution will be crafted in way that "no reasonable person could object" to it.
