Royal tour: Prince William and Catherine depart Australia after Anzac commemorations (ABC)

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have wrapped up their Australian tour and are now making the journey back to the United Kingdom.

Prince William, his wife Catherine and baby George flew out from Fairbairn in Canberra on Friday afternoon.

They were farewelled on the tarmac by Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher.

A few spectators also gathered at the fence to watch.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent the final day of their Australian tour in Canberra commemorating Anzac Day at the Australian War Memorial.

They even made a surprise appearance at the dawn service.

The Royal couple spent almost three weeks in Australasia, beginning their tour in New Zealand.

On the penultimate day of their tour, Prince William and Catherine attended a packed reception at Parliament's Great Hall.

Prince William thanked Australians for their "warmth and generosity" during the tour, and joked about one of the soft toys received by his nine-month-old son.

"We go away with wonderful memories and George goes away with his cuddly wombat which he has taken to chewing so lovingly," he said.

During their stay, the Royal couple visited the Sydney Opera House, spent time in the Blue Mountains and Brisbane, travelled to Adelaide and Canberra, and watched an Uluru sunset.
