Thousands gather for Adelaide dawn service (AAP)

Thousands of people are gathering around Adelaide's war memorial ahead of the annual Anzac Day Dawn service.

The crowd is expected to close North Terrace after an increase in numbers in recent years.

The service will hear from a World War II veteran and will also include the usual laying of wreaths by government, military and community leaders, including South Australian Governor Kevin Scarce.

Clear and cool conditions will greet those attending and should continue for the annual march later on Friday.

For the first time, defence scientists who have been awarded the Australian Operational Service Medal will march together under the defence civilians banner.

Chief defence scientist Alex Zelinsky says those taking part have earned the right to be included in the ceremony having provided exceptional support to Australian troops on overseas missions.
