The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be in Canberra today, as their family tour of Australia and New Zealand draws to a close.

Prince William and his wife Catherine returned to Canberra from Adelaide last night, to be reunited with their nine-month-old son Prince George.

The Royal couple spent Wednesday with disadvantaged young people in Adelaide's northern suburbs and toured the suburb of Elizabeth, named after Prince William's grandmother, the Queen.

It has been a whirlwind family trip with a warm welcome from crowds from Sydney to Brisbane, the Northern Territory and Adelaide.

It has also provided iconic photo opportunities, including the Royal couple in front of Uluru at sunset and Prince George meeting a Bilby named after him at Taronga Zoo.

Today the Royals will begin their day in Canberra by planting a tree in the National Arboretum, in front of a crowd of 50 people who won their places in a special ballot.

Later in the day they will visit Parliament House and the National Portrait Gallery before an evening reception hosted by the Governor-General at Government House.

While the tree planting at the National Arboretum and visit to Parliament House are restricted to the public, it is expected many Canberrans will turn out to see the Royals as they visit the National Portrait Gallery.

ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher says she is looking forward to playing host to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Canberra.

"It's a privilege for me as Chief Minister to welcome them and they seem like a very nice couple. I think it's going to be a wonderful Canberra day," she said.

The Royals will also be in Canberra on Friday for Anzac Day, where they will attend the national ceremony at the Australian War Memorial.
