Royal fever is building in Adelaide's north ahead of today's arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

It is a whirlwind visit, with the couple expected to spend just under three hours in the suburb of Elizabeth, named after Her Majesty the Queen.

Prince William and Catherine, who spent the night in the Northern Territory, will arrive at the RAAF Edinburgh base about 11:00am (ACST).

From there, they will head to Northern Sound System, an alternative learning centre which uses music to engage with young people.

The Royal couple, who are expected to be greeted by about 100 students, will watch hip-hop dancing, a performance of original rap songs and a skateboarding display.

From there the Duke and Duchess will attend a civic reception at the Playford Civic Centre, hosted by South Australian Governor Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce.

Officials predict a crowd of up to 50,000 will gather along the streets hoping to catch a glimpse of the Royal couple.

It is hoped there will also be an opportunity for the public to meet William and Catherine when they walk from their car into the civic centre.

Playford City Council Mayor Glenn Docherty says the council has been receiving calls from fans hoping to camp in the area overnight.

"We've had a number of calls to the council's telephone line asking us what time to get here. All I can say is get here bright and early," he said.

Several roads will be closed along with the local court house to ensure the visit goes off without a hitch.

"There is a large number of security preparations with local police, federal police and obviously those involved with the Royal tour," Mr Docherty said.

Once the day's official events have concluded, the Duke and Duchess will fly to Canberra to be reunited with baby Prince George.

Elizabeth: A Royal suburb

The suburb of Elizabeth, named after Queen Elizabeth II when it was created in 1955, has enjoyed a Royal visit once before.

The monarch visited the suburb eight years later, turning on the tap for the newly constructed water fountain in the heart of the city.

The suburb was developed at a time when many migrants were moving from the United Kingdom to live in Adelaide.

It is a Labor stronghold where the local Holden plant has been the main source of employment.

But the car manufacturer's announcement that it would cease production in Australia by 2017 came as a major blow to the community. Hundreds of workers are now looking to transition into other industries.

Youth unemployment has also been a big problem in Adelaide's northern suburbs. Figures released by the Bureau of Statistics in February showed 19.7 per cent of people aged between 15 and 24 were unemployed.

Mr Docherty said the Royal visit would be an opportunity to remove negative stereotypes that have plagued the community.

"I think it will change perceptions [of] many people in South Australia who may not necessarily think positively, or much, about Elizabeth or Playford," he said.
